GENEVA (5 November 2015) – The UN Committee against Torture is due to review Azerbaijan on 11 and 12 November in sessions that will be webcast live.
Azerbaijan is one of the 158 states that have ratified the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and so is required to undergo regular examinations of its record before the Committee of 10 independent experts.
The Committee’s dialogue with the delegation from the Government of Azerbaijan will be from 10:00-13:00 (13:00 – 16:00 in Baku) on 11 November and from 15:00-18:00 on 12 November.

Among the issues for possible discussion: prosecution of human rights defenders, lawyers who represent them; excessive limitations on freedom of opinion, expression, association and assembly; torture in pretrial detention; use of solitary confinement; deaths in custody; obligations on international and national NGOs to register; reports of excessive police force, especially during demonstrations; independence of the judiciary; domestic violence; redress and compensation for victims of torture or their families.

The Committee will publish its concluding observations here on Wednesday 9 December .
A news conference is scheduled for 12:30 on 9 December at Palais des Nations in Geneva when the Committee will discuss its concluding observations on Azerbaijan and the other countries being reviewed –Liechtenstein Austria, Denmark, China and Jordan.
