Baku, Azerbaijan – A panel discussion on “The role of Science and Research in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Azerbaijan” took place in association with the scientific community of Azerbaijan and with the organizational support of the UN Country Office and the Secretariat of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development.
In his opening speech, Mr. Ali Ahmadov, Chairperson of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development, informed the participants of the work done so far towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as identified in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Mr. Ahmadov also provided information regarding the presentation of the Country Report for the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development which will take place in 2017, as well as the importance of the role played by the scientific community in realizing the SDGs.
Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, underlined the importance of organizing discussions and meetings with relevant stakeholders in achieving the SDGs and the involvement of all parts of the society in this process, which is guided by the principle of “leaving no one behind”.
Other members of the panel, Academician Akif Alizade, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Academician Ziyad Samedzade, Chairman of Milli Majlis’ Commission for Economic Policy, Entrepreneurship and Industry, and Professor Adalat Muradov, Rector of the Azerbaijani State Economic University noted the necessity of progress in scientific and research in this field and the importance of increasing such cooperation.
The panel discussion was concluded with an exchange of opinions from researchers from the Scientific Development Fund, educational institutions and independent scholars on the main opportunities and problems at political, organizational and individual levels to increase the contribution of science, technology and innovations.
On October 6th 2016, the President of Azerbaijan signed into decree the establishment the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development (NCCSD). This marks a significant step towards integrating the SDGs into the national development agenda in the country. The United Nations welcomes this initiative as a commitment to working towards the global goals and is ready to support the Council in its effective implementation of an inclusive process that includes civil society and other segments of Azerbaijani society.
