The first joint Steering Committee meeting of the United Nations – Azerbaijan Partnership Framework 2016-2020 (UNAPF) was convened under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Shahin Mustafayev, Minister of Economy, and Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, UN Resident Coordinator, at the Four Season’s hotel today. The UNAPF Steering Committee will ensure a high-level oversight and guidance for achieving the UNAPF outcomes and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will facilitate coordination among various stakeholders on the UN and Government sides.
The UNAPF is aligned with national development priorities that are outlined in ‘Azerbaijan – 2020: The Vision of the Future’ development concept. The UNAPF will provide support to the Government in three priority areas: (1) promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development and decent work; (2) strengthening institutional capacities and effective public and social services; and (3) improving environmental management and building resilience to climate change and hazards.
‘Our role is to help the Government to foster sustainable development with its three interconnected elements – economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. We will also focus on leaving no one behind which is the central objective of the Sustainable Development Goals’, said Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, UN Resident Coordinator, in his statement.
Particular emphasis will be placed on promoting youth empowerment and participation, advancing gender equality, and improving national statistics. Effective implementation of sound public policies grounded in evidence will be crucial for achieving the UNAPF expected results and SDGs.
Joint Steering Committee will comprise members of the National Action Group for ‘Vision 2020’, Heads of United Nations Agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders.
