Joint research report on Migrants Spouses and Family members presented.

Baku, Azerbaijan, 26 June 2014IOM together with UNDP presented a joint research report on Migrants’ spouses and family members, staying behind in Azerbaijan at UN House. The report is the results of the project “Building Knowledge and Improving Support for Migrants’ Spouses and Family Members Staying Behind in Azerbaijan”, which was carried out by the IOM  under UNDP’s programme on “Support Gender Research in Azerbaijan”. IOM was able to undertake this very important research thanks to the financial support of UNDP in Azerbaijan. 

The report, presented in both English and Azerbaijani, illustrates the situation of the target beneficiaries with evidence and features legal assistance that could provide women and children in need with immediate and practical solutions to problems affecting their livelihoods.

Welcoming the participants of the event, Mr. Antonius Broek, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative informed about the advantages and disadvantages of migration both in national and global level. He stressed the importance of the findings for the central and local authorities, and all stakeholders aiming or standing ready to improve the development opportunities, rights and social protection of migrants’ spouses and families staying behind in Azerbaijan. 

Mr. Serhan Aktoprak, IOM’s Officer in Charge stated that the overall objective of the research was to attain a better understanding and enhanced awareness among policymakers on the situation of the target group and existing gaps in policy and support programmes. Another goal was also to improve legal support for the target group and increased awareness on access procedures of the legal assistance.

The representatives of  the Cabinet of Ministers, State Migration Service, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population, the Ministry Economy and Industry, State Committee on Deals of Refugees as well as UNDP, IDPs, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, ILO and foreign countries’ Embassies residing in Azerbaijan and Media participated at the presentation ceremony of the research report.
