Baku, Azerbaijan – The 5th of June is globally observed as World Environment Day to raise awareness on environmental issues and action for the protection of nature. The theme for this year is “Connecting People to Nature”.
In Azerbaijan, the United Nations System in the country in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and ‘IDEA’ Public Union launched an initiative to mark this Day.
The event was held in Gala Historical Ethnographic Museum, the first ecological-ethnographic and archeological reserve in Azerbaijan. This center includes an organic demonstration farm (sheep breeding, plantation of cereals, fruit trees), traditional craft workshops (carpet and felt making), as well as organic food and craft shops.
With the support provided by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Azerbaijan, an exhibition was set to portray selected pictures drawn by the children aged between 7-10 for drawing completion. The topic of this competition was “Let’s reduce the negative impacts of domestic waste on the environment and human health”, with an aim to help children, teachers and parents think about the relation between irresponsible production and consumption, and its hazards to nature and human health.
Awarding the winners of the competition, Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, emphasized big potential and important role of young generation in protecting the planet.
“Children by their nature are prone to protect environment, are ready to volunteer their time and efforts for tree planting, cleaning activities, taking care of animals.” Mr. Isaczai highlighted the importance of school education in changing behavior of children.
